Mother´s Day

HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE!!!

Although we should demonstrate our love to our mother 24/7, it is good to know that one day a year it is “HER” special day! We try our best to make her feel appreciated, loved and valued; but do you know since when we celebrate this beautiful tradition?

The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday.

The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States. Although she was successful in 1914 when U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made official the holiday in the United States, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s.

As the American holiday was adopted by other countries and cultures, the date was changed to fit already existing celebrations honoring motherhood, such as Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom or, in Greece, the Orthodox celebration of the presentation of Jesus Christ to the temple (2 February).

Other countries selected a date with historical significance. For example, Bolivia's Mother's Day is the date of a battle in which women participated; Ex-communists countries usually celebrated the socialist International Women´s day instead of the more capitalist Mother's Day. Some ex-communist countries, like Russia, still follow this custom or simply celebrate both holidays, which is the custom in Ukraine.

Most of the countries celebrate this Holiday the second Sunday of May, however Mother´s day in Mexico is celebrated May 10th, and we make a great big celebration out of it, as we normally do!
At the end, it does not matter which day we celebrate our mother as long as we make them feel special and loved.

At Le Reve Hotel & Spa (an amazing Playa del Carmen Hotel) we know how to pamper your mom; we have a variety of facial and body massage treatments for her to enjoy, delicious food, unparalleled views and much more, simply the best of Rivera Maya!
